I am not a landscape photographer. I have always considered landscapes to be my weakness because I just could not understand how to relate to it as my subject? How do you "read" a landscape and understand it?
Considering that I am now living in the most beautuful ,fantastic, scenic area of the Monterey Peninsula (and Carmel and Big Sur), I would never forgive myself if I left here without at least attempting to understand how to photograph landscapes. So I have set my sites on Big Sur (my favorite place). Along with my family I brought my Canon G11 (not my 5D) because it's lighweight, fits in a backpack and shoots in manual and RAW. It's a fabulous little camera.
Without boring anyone I learned that(when dealing with water landscapes)
1. You have to be patient.
2. You have to study your subject (just like people!)
3. Watch, Wait, Learn
4. Shoot a lot of frames..especially if something is moving..like the water.. (I shot about 15o images)
I was amazed at how much I learned after shooting for about 2 hours (off and on). Like anything it's practice and research. I would love to go back at sunset when the light is not so harsh. I took these at about 3 pm.
Here are 2 pics from Garapata in Big Sur..
